My letter to the editor of the Times Colonist, published yesterday:

New York and our housing crisis

Kudos to Jody Paterson for her comparison of today’s poverty crisis to that experienced in New York City in the 1860s (“In New York slums, at least they had hope,” Oct. 10).

As rental housing on the lowest end of the cost spectrum becomes scarcer, more work must be done to compensate. It will mean the co-operation of all levels of government, in particular the federal government. Private developers, architects, non-profit agencies and lending institutions will all need to bring something to the table.

As illustrated by the newly opened housing project on Fernwood’s Yukon Street or the two new subsidized suites planned for the new 819 Yates condo demonstrates, in the war on poverty, there are small victories to be had.
